I can’t begin to tell you what a life changing experience our two weeks in Tanzania has become for us.
Where to begin… The Wheelers came away from this experience individually and collectively using words like “life changing”; “profound”; “unexpected”; “beyond expectations”; “different”; “more than expected”; “awe inspiring”. We all agreed that our next vacation will most definitely be a return to Africa. I have personally travelled to over 50 countries and the place that I want to go back to is Africa.
The accommodations : outstanding but very different in each locale.
Everywhere we went, we found and saw everything we were looking for (More about Brad Hansen later). The best word I can come up with to describe our 2 weeks is “perfect” organization, planning & accommodations; staff in every location; what we saw; what we learned.
But I have to talk about Brad Hansen, because we all believe that it was Brad that lifted this experience from a great vacation to an extraordinary, life changing event. No offense to the would-be Nigel, but without Brad it could not have been the same. Brad became part of our family, and I think we became part of his, we laughed together (non-stop); shared stories of lives over many fires; learned so much about so many things, his knowledge (or ability to make stuff up J,) was extraordinary. Brad is charming; passionate; enthusiastic; incredibly knowledgeable; fun to be with; has an amazing instinct for what his guests want (if he overhears a comment about something his guests want or would like to see, it magically happens); great intuition and loves both what he does and revels in the ability to show it to others if they are really interested (and not just tourists….which we tried hard to do). We are a group of 4, ages range from 73; 57; 42 and 18 with diverse backgrounds and interests, for each person’s own reasons, came away with the firm belief that Brad added another 50% to what any other guide could have brought.
So much so, that we have decided that if we cannot have Brad on a future safari, then we will either change our schedule and timetable, or simply not go. My youngest, Tynan is 18 and starting college in a few weeks. He is an artist, one of his paintings won the 2013 Congressional Art Contest and his painting hung for a year in the Capitol Building in Washington DC for a year before being bought by one of the congressmen, he is doing a Fine Arts degree as his major. He fell for Africa so badly that he has already received the OK from his college advisor to a 6 credit photographic or painting study in Africa next year over our summer, as part of his degree and has already begun lessons in Swahili – seriously! Is there any other phrase than ‘life changing’?
